Early auditory evoked potentials: developmental aspects and validity in neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Auditory evoked potentials and in this context especially five waves in the first 10 ms (early auditory evoked potentials = EAEP) are a diagnostic aid in topodiagnosis of posterior fossa diseases. This is due to waves I to V which arise along the acoustic nerve and in brain stem structures such as medulla, pons and mid-brain. Besides an indication about the site of a lesion in the posterior fossa, wave V allows an objective threshold determination. The present results were gained in normal children aged 1-3 years and in children with neuropaediatric and audiologic disorders.

Developmental dissociation between visual and auditory repetition priming: The role of input lexicons

Contrasting theories posit the source of verbal repetition priming in the activation of preexisting memory representations in the input lexicons or, alternatively, in the formation of new episodic memory traces. The two hypotheses predict different outcomes from the comparison of developmental rates of visual and auditory verbal repetition priming. The activation theory predicts a developmental dissociation between the early maturation of auditory priming and the later maturation of visuo-verbal priming, contingent upon the discrepant acquisition rates of the auditory and visual input lexicons. Radioimmunological determination of somatomedin B in healthy children and patients with HGH deficiency

In 192 boys and girls, aging from 1 month to 16 years, serum somatomedin B levels were performed by radioimmunoassay of Kabi Inc., slightly modified. In girls the mean value increased from the 1 st. month at the end of the second year of live from 10.5±6.2 to 19.2±9.2 mg/1, in boys at the same time from 10±3.9 to 20.3±6.2 mg/1. The values decreased in girls in the following years up to the age of 14-16 years to 13.7±7.5 mg/1; in the boys to 11.5±4.2mg/1. The beginning of the decrease was in girls two years earlier than in boys. To these values of normal children were compared the values of 8 patients with HGH deficiency. Ultrasonography and gastric emptying: evaluation in infants with gastroesophageal reflux.

We have applied ultrasonography to the evaluation of gastric emptying in children. Two different populations have been investigated: normal children and children with gastroesophageal reflux. All the patients were less than 6 months of age. The diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux was defined by 24-h pH measurement. The technique, used to measure gastric emptying, is the one described by Bolondi et al. In this research we used the simplified method. All children had been submitted to the examination after 4-h fasting. The standard meal was the usual milk formula, 300 ml/m2 body surface area (BSA).
